Root Raced to 27th Ton as England takes Control in a Run-Fest
Ex-skipper pertains his peak run in the longest format as England gave a fitting reply with Ollie Pope’s 2nd century on the batting paradise.
Joe Root can be regarded as the greatest gift to the Test Cricket in the coming years vis-à-vis his dream run in the longest format over couple of years. Giving another illustration of his golden patch, Root slammed another ton-his 27th in an intense run carnival at the Trent Bridge Stadium, Nottingham.
Continuing the overnight score of 90 for 1, England opener Alex Lees scored his maiden half century in Test Cricket after some due start to his career. Pope continued his control and backed his strength to reach his 2nd test career ton providing a boost to the hosts after Kiwis registered a score of 553 in the first innings riding on Daryl Mitchell’s 190.
Pope and Root’s resistance
Lees fall of Matt Henry’s patience giving an edge to the Mitchell at first slip. After that, Pope was joined by the 31-year-old Yorkshire star and started dealing in boundaries. In between, Pope completed his century and went on to break his best ever score of 135* at Port Elizabeth in 2019. He scored magnificent 145 off 239 balls which comprises of 13 fours and 2 sixes too. Both had a strong alliance of 187 runs for the third wicket.
Captain Ben Stokes then came in to bat with a clear intent of slogging and increasing the run rate with a 46 off 33 balls comprising of 6 fours and 2 sixes with a strike rate of 139.39 before going high just to be caught by the Trent Boult at deep mid-wicket.
Root equals Kohli and Smith
With completing his 27th ton on Sunday, Joe Root equals the record of most centuries in test cricket with his fab-4 counterparts Virat Kohli and Steve Smith who are fighting from the rough patch from nearly year and so. While Kohli last met with test century in 2019 against Bangladesh in a pink ball test, Smith reached three figure landmark against India in Jan 2021 at Sydney.
Since January last year, both the legends have failed to score a century while Root has slammed 10 centuries in between.
Joe Root is currently unbeaten on 163 and will look to drag up his innings to slam his 6th double hundred.
